Dear Borges
Posted on Friday, April 10, 2009
An article in La Nación (in Spanish) tells how Ana Simon, a Romanian-born movie producer who now resides in Geneva, has been collecting the messages that random people have left for Borges at the site of his tombstone.

Many of the comments are quite moving and I am sure the master would have enjoyed reading them himself. I am translating a few below for your enjoyment:

- "Borges, I have come to visit you together with the shadows of my own dead. Because as you said, we´re not just one, but also the other, the others. I salute you, O Master"

"Dear Borges: your wisdom makes the world a much more interesting place. Please receive thanks from a friend. My wife and I came from China to visit you. -Yang"

"Hello Borges, today I thought of you while reading you in my German language. Please receive my greetings"

"Only one thing I have to admonish you about: the fact that you encourage our disappearance as cultures, as native aborigines of these lands. I am a zapotec native, but I still cry for your departure. We are at peace"

"Ché: sólo una cosa tengo que reclamarte, el que hayas pugnado por nuestra desaparición como cultura, como pueblos originarios indígenas. Más aún, siendo indígena zapoteco, ante tu tumba derramo lágrimas en tu memoria. Estamos en paz".

"The fatherland is now all the words, all the trees that gave me their shadow, all the books that I have read for my own good ... how right you were, Master. -Luciana"

Moving indeed. I wonder what I would write to Borges, if he were able to read me. Maybe, to start with, I´d just write two words: "THANK YOU"

-Martin
